Screen Printing
Screen printing (also known as silk screening) is a printing technique where an image is inked through a screen onto textiles or papers. Using light, an image from a film positive is first “burned” onto a mesh screen that has been treated with light-sensitive emulsion. The screen(s) (one for each color) are put into a press. Special inks are applied through the unblocked portions of the screen with a squeegee. The garment or fabric is then treated with high levels of heat to “cure” or “dry” the ink.
This decorating technique can be used on a wide variety of shirt types and other apparel, including the ever popular tshirt. Ink technology has come a long way, so you can really have fun with all the options now available with special effects and high-end decorating, including:
- Glow in the dark
- Photo-chromic (UV activated)
- Thermo-chromic (heat activated)
- Reflective (great for safety gear)
- Metallic and Sparkle
- High Density
- Puff, Suede and Textured
- Four color process and index color on light and dark colored garments
